Chances are there are some of you who have never been to the small town of Kaleva – or maybe you have been there once or twice to go to the grocery store, hardware store, barber shop or one of the other local businesses. But how many of you have taken the opportunity tojoin the friendly folks in Kaleva when they have their annual Kaleva Days? If you haven’t, maybe you should head that way on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the event.

What goes on? Well a little bit of everything; starting with Northern Michigan Dragway Racing, Beer Tent and live entertainment on Friday night. And then the festivities start all over again on Saturday, with a bounce house and games for the kids, as well as craft and vendor booths, an antique tractor display, 5k run to the Finnish Line, car show, euchre tournament, a “Wife Carrying Contest”, more good food, more beer, more great entertainment, and historical displays.

You can start your day out on Sunday by stopping by the Lion’s Den for a delicious breakfast buffet and then join in on the Community Church Service and listen to some music. Other activities on Sunday include more great music, more displays, and a parade.

Founded by Finnish settlers, Kaleva is located in the center of Manistee County. It is known for its Bottle House Museum, a unique home built with 60,000 glass bottles by John Makinen, then owner of a pop bottling factory. Now owned and operated by the Kaleva Historical Society, the Bottle House Museum is listed on the National Historic Register. Another landmark in Kaleva is the RR Depot Museum which houses railroad artifacts and displays. In July, the Village of Kaleva sponsors a 3-day community festival which includes music, food, car and tractor show, games, parade, beer tent, poker run, crafts, 5K run/walk, bake sales and more.
