6th Annual Tight Lines for Troops Tournament
May 15th - May 16th, 2015
Lake Michigan - Seng's Marina (Port of Call)
Little River Casino Resort
Buoyed by record 2014 results – both by the number of participants and total of charitable funds raised – the organizing committee has set its sights even higher for 2014. “Over 60 boat captains have generously committed their craft and crews to treat about 300 Michigan veterans to a fun day of Lake Michigan fishing with fellow vets and volunteers. Our foremost mission has always been to deliver a day of pure Michigan fishing fun for these Michigan heroes – and I’m proud to say we have accomplished that objective and then some,” said Bob Guenthardt, event founder and Chairman of the board for Tight Lines for Troops.
This year’s event is presented by Little River Casino Resort, along with Seng’s Marina and Manistee area fishing boats. Additionally, local Veterans groups – United Veterans Council, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Warrior Society, our local National Guard and U.S. Coast Guard, Rolling Thunder Michigan Chapter #1, Manistee County Visitors Bureau, the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce, Downtown merchants and a host of volunteers from across the state contribute to the event.
“In 2013 we distributed over $25,000 to three exemplary organizations dedicated to serve Michigan veterans,” explained Guenthardt. Proceeds were distributed to the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, Paralyzed Veterans of America Michigan Chapter and to the Manistee County Veterans Endowment Fund. A highlight each year is the ‘flag waving welcome’ that the community puts on for the boats as they return from the ‘Big Lake’. Last year, thousands of folks lined the river channel to salute these American heroes. One Vietnam veteran participant commented – “This is the ‘Welcome Home’ I never received - you have no idea how much this means to me.”
The public is invited to bring their flags to the Manistee River walk on Saturday, May 17th at 12:00 Noon to be a part of the area’s biggest and best salute to these American heroes. Rolling Thunder Michigan Chapter #1 will once again generously supply thousands of loaner flags for fans to wave as the fleet returns to port. Downtown merchants have prepared a day-long celebration on River Street to expand this year’s events.
“The success of the Tight Lines for Troops event has always wholly derived from the generosity and kindness of a community proud to honor Michigan veterans,” said Eileen Duffin of Little River Casino Resort, the presenting sponsor of this annual event. “To play any part in this impressive event has been an honor for me.”
