THE BRIEF HISTORY: In 1870, Henry Starke founded Starkeville, now known as Arcadia Township. Agriculture was the major industry including farming, dairy products and maple sugar. Lumber boomed by 1880 with major developments to follow. Among these were a post office and the Arcadia and Betsie River Railway. During this period, lots were developed in the Village of Arcadia and could be purchased for a mere $25.
TODAY: Arcadia is a water lover's delight offering sandy beaches, Lake Michigan access, excellent fishing, boating, and kayaking. Home to Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course, named one of the top 50 courses in the America by Golf Digest, boasting spectacular Lake Michigan views. Visit the Arcadia Historical Museum and learn about the rich history of this area and the home of Harriet Quimby, the First lady of Aviation. Travel the scenic M22 corridor to Arcadia and experience the splendor of Michigan's most scenic drive as nominated by National Geographic Traveler Magazine.
A special point of interest, and perfect picture spot, is Inspiration Point on M22 just north of town. There you will find one of the highest points in Manistee County, a park, and lookout area with a new deck furnished with telescopes by the local Lions Club.
DON’T MISS: Arcadia Historical Museum. This fantastic collection of artifacts showcases this small towns unique heritage. Grebe Park on Lake Arcadia offers an accessible kayak launch. From there you can explore this serene inland lake, the channel leading to the Arcadia Marsh Preserve, or access Lake Michigan for a big lake adventure.
