SUMMARY:Manistee National Forest Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Manistee National Forest Festival has been a signature event for over 80 years in our community.  We understand the deep roots it has with the many traditions and favorite events.  It’s a homecoming for our community that brings families\, friends\, and tourists together for this summer celebration.\n\nWe regretfully inform the community that because of the COVID-19 pandemic\, the Manistee National Forest Festival has been postponed until July 1-5\, 2021.  This decision has not been easy for us or one that has been taken lightly.  The health and safety of our citizens\, volunteers\, vendors\, and visitors is the main concern especially when many of the events held within the festival encourage and draw large gatherings.\n\n“I am deeply saddened about the decision to postpone the festival as it’s a long-standing summer tradition for our community and a boost to our local economy\,” stated Stacie Bytwork\, President of the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce.  The festival has a huge economic impact on our businesses and provides fundraising events for our non-profit organizations.  The Chamber asks if you are able to\, please continue to support local businesses and organizations during this difficult time.\n\nThe Chamber would like to thank our sponsors\, the committee\, community event organizers\, volunteers\, and partner organizations for their support and assistance.  No one could have anticipated COVID-19 and the effects that it has caused to many businesses\, our healthcare systems\, law enforcement\, non-profit and governmental organizations\, and individuals.\n\n\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Spirit of the Woods Folk Festival
DESCRIPTION:Yes! There will be a Folk Festival in Brethren on June 19! \nOur motto this year: Keep it simple\, keep it safe.\nThink of it as a concert in the park with music from 1:00 to 6:00pm. \nIn order to increase safety for all of us\, we are making changes to the way we have done this festival in the past. We reduced it from an all day event to an afternoon of music and we are expanding the listening space so that people will be able to be safely distant. Over the 43 years that we have sponsored this festival and other concerts\, our audience has been respectful and we expect kindness and consideration. \nOther changes to reduce the risk: there will be no t-shirt sales or food booths\, no program book to hand out. \nThe festival will be held in the Dickson Township Park in Brethren\, Michigan on June 19\, 1:00 to 6:00pm. \nThere is no admission charge but donations are needed. It is expected that COVID guidelines will be followed. \nPLEASE NOTE: if the local conditions or state & CDC guidelines change\, the festival may be cancelled. \nThe Spirit of the Woods Music Association is simply a group of folks who love traditional music and get together to do the necessary work to bring musicians and music lovers together. Since 1978 we have put on an annual music festival\, the Spirit of the Woods Folk Festival\, held at the Dickson Township Park in Brethren\, Michigan\, the third Saturday in June. \nSpirit of the Woods also presents concerts\, dances\, open mics\, and special events during the fall and winter months.

SUMMARY:OneKama OneFifty
DESCRIPTION: ONEKAMA\, MICHIGAN’S  “OneKama OneFifty” CELEBRATION\n \n150 years ago\, Onekama\, Michigan had its official start.  The wildly fascinating story of “The Cut” is an iconic and life-altering event that shaped Onekama.  The local homesteaders\, tired of conflict with the Porter Lumber Milling Company whose dam at Portage Creek flooded farmland\, took matters literally into their own hands. Illegally hand digging a small trench from Lake Michigan to Portage Lake to lower the lake to its original depth\, the homesteaders created a fantastic spectacle! On the night of May 14\, 1871 when the trench was completed\, the water rushed out taking with it woods and sand and creating a channel 500 feet wide and 12 feet deep. This channel brought great opportunity for the homesteaders and the mill and remains to this day an integral part of the Onekama community.\n \n\nCoincidently just a week before\, the Postmaster General appointed a postmaster to an office at the newly named village of “Onekama”.  2021 is the sesquicentennial anniversary of these two events. \n\n\nThrough a series of activities and events based on Onekama’s 150 year anniversary\, OneKama OneFifty will celebrate the Portage Lake Channel and the village of Onekama.  Activities will feature boat races and water recreation events\, historical tours and programs\, arts and literary tie-ins\, a gala dinner\, and a formal dedication of the Portage Lake channel to Lake Michigan. \n“OneKama OneFifty” CELEBRATION Events  \nJune 11: Onekama Lions’ Community Dinner with John Wemlinger’s debut of The Cut\, Historical Stories\, and Games.
